"Here Comes The Son"
A neighbor lady with whom neither myself nor my staff have a good rapport sarcastically referred today to the four of us as "the Beatles of paranoid Christian reconstructionism" and even though none of us think of ourselves as paranoid or reconstructionists and we are not fans of the LSD-laced experimental "music" of the boys from Liverpool I was however quite amused at the comparison. Amen.

So we took a break this afternoon from trying to restock the copy machine and discussed which of the Beatles each of us resembles as well as of course which of the four Gospel writers each of our personalities fit.

We decided that being the most attractive Sister Rachel was George as he was in the earliest days referred to as the "cute one" and that if she had written one of the Gospels it would have been Mark. Amen.

Sister Sara was matched with Paul as she is the most creative and outgoing and had before her conversion to Christianity a severe addiction to marijuana and was compared also to the Gospel writer Matthew. Amen.

Being something of a special case as he is older and a bit standoffish and not an entirely pleasant fellow we were forced to tag Brother Randall with both Ringo the drummer and Luke the physician.

And naturally I was compared to John as I have of course always been the moody sensitive one. Amen!

This is where the comparison clearly breaks down as tradition holds that the Gospel writer John was the only apostle to not be martyred but I would like to use this opportunity to once again point out that I have not and never will advocate the use of violence as it is both morally and legally wrong and is acceptable only when measured out by the Lord God in the form of divine retribution against those who reject His offer of eternal life or who are simply sinning too much here in this one. Amen.

If you really want to yuck it up might I suggest you ask Jesus Christ into your heart to be your personal Lord and Savior so that when it is your turn to stand before Him at the judgment seat you will ultimately find yourself in the line leading to the escalator rather than the one leading toward the slide as I can assure you no one in that line is going to be laughing. Amen.

Fun with Bible Questions

I am a mite bit confused. Not at this post really, but this makes me think of my confusion.

Which half of the Bible should I listen to more?

The Old Testament has all the stuff about smiting and Commandments and Sodom and Gammorah, which you seem to take as very important.

However, the NEW Testament has Jesus and the Gospels.

Again, indeed, I am very confused. Enlighten me?

Perhaps I can explain.

While the Old Testament is part of the Bible, it is not so much looked at as is the New Testament. Jesus basically said "Forget the 213 commandments, just love each other as I have loved you, and love the father with all your heart." That is what Christianity was originally all about - loving all people as your lord and saviour, Jesus Christ, loved you, and loving god with all your heart and soul. The Old Testament is basically just to tell you how to run your life. It's really not that big a part of Christianity. If it was, why don't Christian celebrate Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, Hannekah, The High Holy Days, etc? They don't.

I'll bet Amenlover didn't even know there was 213 commandments.

Anyone who listens to the music of Rammstein would recognize that line anywhere! Refering to your title, of course: "Here comes the son." Although I know that the line really means "Here comes the sun," I still think it's interesting. Just where did you think of that idea?

Sie ist der hellste Stern von allen
Vier
Und wird nie von Himmel fallen.

Hrm...John Lennon, moody, sensitive songwriter of legendary ability and soul.

John, author of the obviously least Christian-esque canonical gospel. Perhaps I'll go listen to some Beatles tunes (or Lennon solo work) looking for religious overtones. Could it be that there are Gnostic connections between the Johns of the world? Now THAT would be interesting.

But seriously, what DO you think of the gospel of John? I've been studying religion for some time now (about to graduate with a degree in it) and this has always been one of my favorite conversations: chitchat about the overtones found in the gospel of John that don't necessarily point to traditional Christian values. Heh.

I can understand not wanting to respond to most of the comments he gets because they are all attacks. but I have noticed some serious posts to him ( I have even posted seriously to him ) and he will not even respond to those.

his only response is a return attack in one single posting either in lj or a web page, condeming all those who do not take his words at face value.

here is a place you may find interesting though.

it is a posting forum where christianity and all relegions are open for debate. for the most part the postings are handled maturely.

It's the band Paul McCartney was in before Wings. They were sort of like the Monkees, or the Dave Clark Five. Unlike the Monkees, who continue to tour with great success, the Beatles lacked the continued support of a network television series, and had to disband around 1970.

That's a common misconception, a cultural urban legend, if you will, resulting from the comparitively primitive state of the mass media of the early 60s, and it led to much misunderstanding and heartache for the Fab Four.

The original quote is correctly attributed to the actor Jack Lemmon, who was shooting some picture (possibly Save the Tiger or The Great Race, but I'm only guessing) on one of the major studio backlots at the time. During a lunch break, he bumped into fellow thespian Jeffrey Hunter, who was starring in the then-controversial Biblical epic King of Kings. Lemmon, never a large man, was surprised at the noticeable difference in their heights, and was heard to exclaim, "Holy shit, look at this! I'm bigger than Jesus!"

Hunter, rather hurt by this comment, decided that he could gain some small revenge by leaking the story to Hollywood gossip columnist Hedda Hopper. Unfortunately, Hopper had entered her dotage by this time, and mis-heard the anecdote. Her poor hearing, combined with her increasing dementia and deeply conservative views, led her to attribute the quote to the (to her) threatening figure of the long-haired cultural invader John Lennon.

However, all was not lost. Sales of Beatles records in the South skyrocketed, as citizens bought the albums solely in order to burn them, and Lennon and the rest of the band profited handsomely from the extra royalties.

It all depends on how you define "satire". Amen.

If your definition of satire includes spending years and years of your afterlife trying to swim to the surface of the lake of fire only to have burning hot coals shoveled onto your unsaved head by giggling pig-shaped demons because you were too busy here on earth trying to use non-KJV versions of the Bible to justify abortion and homosexuality and masturbating to Internet pornography instead of accepting the love of Jesus who died for us so that He would not be forced to smack every one of us into the depths of HELL then by all means laugh it up now because the Lord will certainly not be passing out high fives at the judgment seat to those who ignored the warnings of His Messenger. Amen.

Perhaps if I too were to keep myself up until 3 o'clock on a Sunday morning reading Fight Club instead of seeing that I was well rested for the morning worship service then my own judgment would also be sufficiently impaired to the extent that I would find not just the Beatles but even Ani DiFranco and Sting to be something more than wolves in sheep's clothing intent upon destroying the social fabric of Western civilization from the inside out by filling the minds of young people with messages of rebellion and drug abuse as well as of course the socialist agenda. i think there's something to be said about the psychology of un-attractive people being drawn to religion. it gives them a reason to feel superior and look down on all the attractive people having a great time.
